In this 
Democracy Symposium event, Katherine Gehl and University Professor Michael Porter will describe the workings of the American political system in a powerful way that makes clear why so many of us assess it as dysfunctional. Based on that analysis they will provide a practical roadmap for making transformational improvements.
Using the widely-adopted analytical framework pioneered by Professor Porter in the late 70s for understanding industries and competition, they will show how politics in American today is in fact an industry with objectives that are not aligned with citizen needs, and stifles introduction of new ideas and innovation which could address the many identified ills. Their detailed understanding of the workings of the politics industry then makes clear what needs to be done to achieve significant change, and in fact explains why so many other well-intentioned attempts to do just that come to naught.

Ms Gehl and Professor Porter are publishing in the next few weeks the book "The Politics Industry: How Political Innovation Can Break Partisan Gridlock and Save Our Democracy" (pre-order here ), which is tied to launch of The Institute for Political Innovation - website to be released soon at www.political-innovation.org . (Proceeds from the book are being given to the institute.)
In our session on June 9, Katherine and Michael will lay out their analysis and recommendations, provide concrete opportunities for you to help implement those recommendations, and take your questions. It promises to be a useful and lively event.
