Democracy Session - American Politics Industry - Tues 6/9 4:00 - 5:30 PM EDT

"The Politics Industry: How Political Innovation Can Break Partisan Gridlock and Save Our Democracy"
with Katherine Gehl and University Professor Michael Porter

The session recording is available for viewing herenew window

The inspiring op-ed Katherine referred to at the close of the session, penned by David Riemer's son and his opposite-party co-legislator in Wisconsin, can be found here.

In this kmg-mep-headshot-outside-for-webDemocracy Symposium event, Katherine Gehl and University Professor Michael Porter will describe the workings of the American political system in a powerful way that makes clear why so many of us assess it as dysfunctional.  Based on that analysis they will provide a practical roadmap for making transformational improvements.

Using the widely-adopted analytical framework pioneered by Professor Porter in the late 70s for understanding industries and competition, they will show how politics in American today is in fact an industry with objectives that are not aligned with citizen needs, and stifles introduction of new ideas and innovation which could address the many identified ills.  Their detailed understanding of the workings of the politics industry then makes clear what needs to be done to achieve significant change, and in fact explains why so many other well-intentioned attempts to do just that come to naught.

For those wishing to learn more in advance of the session, the website gehl-porter.org new window describes their research and findings, including a concise two-page summary of their findings and recommendations that powerfully tells the core story.  (Download that herenew window)

Ms Gehl and Professor Porter are publishing in the next few weeks the book "The Politics Industry: How Political Innovation Can Break Partisan Gridlock and Save Our Democracy" (pre-order here new window), which is tied to launch of The Institute for Political Innovation - website to be released soon at www.political-innovation.org new window.  (Proceeds from the book are being given to the institute.)

In our session on June 9, Katherine and Michael will lay out their analysis and recommendations, provide concrete opportunities for you to help implement those recommendations, and take your questions. It promises to be a useful and lively event.
